CAIR-Houston's President Testifies at Immigration Hearing
(HOUSTON, TX 5/29/07) – CAIR-Houston’s President Dr. Tarek Hussein testified at an immigration bill hearing held by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee at Houston City Hall today at 3:00pm. The hearing
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee addressed the current legislation regarding immigration in America. She was joined by Council Member Adrian Garcia and a member from the board of HISD. The hearing was also held to discuss the community's thoughts and concerns on the temporary worker visas, family reunification, border security and citizenship.
Dr. Tarek Hussein’s testimony voiced concern for citizenship delays for Muslim-Americans as well as obtaining security checks at the border.
“The greatest problem facing Muslim’s in America in relation to immigration are lengthy background checks. These background checks only serve to hurt national security by keeping foreign nationals within America’s border’s pending security checks and alienating those who have contributed to America’s society,” said CAIR-Houston’s president Tarek Hussein.
Other members of the community who testified were leaders such as Deputy District Director of LULAC Jose Jimenez and National President of the National Hispanic Professional Organization Ben Mendez.
