Civil Rights Workshop at MIST

On Saturday, March 20, 2010, CAIR Houston presented a Civil Rights Workshop at the Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament.  Muslim Students Associations from High Schools all around Houston attended the workshop.

Many of these students were introduced to civil rights issues and CAIR for the first time.  The students were given a presentation on CAIR Houston’s functions and goals. This was followed by a civil rights exercise in which the students were separated into groups and given unique civil rights dilemmas which they were asked to solve and explain how they would deal with the situation. One group of students got so involved that they created a skit on how to deal with school officials asking them to shave their beards.  Many students also expressed interest in volunteering for CAIR and getting involved in Civil Rights Advocacy in the future.

Presentation on Islam  - San Jacinto Community College

On Feb 2nd 2010, Dr. Tarek Hussein, President of Cair Houston, gave a presentation on Islam to a sociology class at San Jacinto College’s Central Campus. Dr. Hussein gave a 50 minute lecture along with a powerpoint presentation which gave an introduction on Islam and Muslims. The topics that Dr. Hussein touched on included facts such as the current Muslim population in the world as well as the population in the United States. Dr. Hussein also explained the foundations and basic tenets of Islam to the class and many issues that are at the forefront of Islam and America today.

The response to the presentation was overwhelming. One student was moved to tears, stating that much of the information she had about Islam was false and that in the future she would take more care to watch the media when they run stories regarding Islam. The entire class asked for a translation of the Quran which CAIR Houston will provide to them.
